Cruise Cancelled Following Tragic Loss of Woman Abandoned on Island

A 60-day cruise through the Australian Coast is being halted following the fatal incident of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a isolated coastal location.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the remote island with other travelers from the vessel, but parted ways from the excursion for a break. The vessel left without her and returned later that day after the ship staff discovered the lady was unaccounted for.

A major search operation located her body the following day.

Officials are investigating the event, together with law enforcement and the official investigator.

Head of the shipping company said that passengers and staff on the vessel were told that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier engine troubles".

The child of the deceased woman said that her family was "surprised and grieved that the liner left the island after an scheduled tour without my mother".

Via her announcement, she portrayed her parent as an "vigorous elderly person" who was a member of a hiking club.

"From the little information we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of attention and basic judgment," she said.

She added that she hoped the investigation would be able to determine what "the organization should have performed that might have saved Mother's life".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and she fell ill on the hill climb," she explained.

"They requested her to go back, alone. Then the vessel sailed away, apparently without performing a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that sequence, or not long after, she succumbed, alone."

Operator Reaction

Via official communication, the Head verified that the operator was "working closely with officials to assist their examination".

He stated that the company was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had extended its total backing to the family.

The vessel serves up to one hundred twenty passengers with forty-six staff, according to company information. It was specifically designed to access isolated areas of the nation's coast and is outfitted with "small boats" - compact vessels used to ferry travelers on shore trips.
