Silverstone to Host F1 Sprint Event in the 2026 Season

Silverstone has been selected as one of six sprint events on the upcoming F1 season

The UK circuit previously staged sprint in 2021, the year this racing format first appeared

The biggest surprise comes with including Singapore on the sprint schedule – the difficulty of overtaking on the Marina Bay track may not instantly make it look like an ideal candidate for a sprint event

Additional venues scheduled to feature sprints next season will be China, Miami, Canada and the Netherlands, which is exiting the F1 schedule following the 2025 championship

Next year's calendar comprises 24 races and was revealed this past summer

It features an additional event in the Spanish capital Madrid in addition to the event at Barcelona's Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, that has been home to Spain's F1 round since 1991

The Catalan GP's deal expires following the 2025 championship yet it remains in the running to be a potential host scheduled to share a slot with Belgium's iconic circuit

Further venues that have shown their desire in rotating are Hockenheim or the Nürburgring, Portugal and Istanbul Park

The championship organizers are additionally working on arrangements to introduce a Grand Prix in Bangkok, potentially as early as 2028

Sprint events have numbered six shortened races each year over the past few years and F1 opted to maintain the total for 2026 due to increased pressure on the teams following the new chassis and engine standards which take effect

That said, F1 bosses reviewing increasing the total of shortened-format weekends beginning the following season potentially a dozen, resulting in sprints at half the races during the season

A shortened race weekend includes a brief race with its own grid-setting shootout, ahead of the Grand Prix qualifying and the main event

A traditional grand prix weekend includes three practice sessions before qualifying and the main event

Ongoing discussions regarding changes to the format during shortened-race events, which could include testing reverse grids

"Including four competitive sessions instead of two in a standard F1 event, short-form weekends offer increased excitement daily for viewers, broadcast partners and for the promoters"

Sprint events also generate increased earnings for the sport since hosts are prepared to offer more for these events
